Información:

The Hummel Concerto in G is in the British Library. There are two different mandolin parts: the original in Hummel’s hand dates from 1799. This version also has alternatives added in at a later date. The second part seems to date from later on and also appears to be in Hummel’s hand. This later version has quite significant changes to the 1st and 3rd movements but more subtle changes in this slow movement (the 2nd). It is the later version which is published here.

The guitar part is an arrangement by Craig Ogden of the orchestral scoring. This mandolin and guitar version was recorded by Alison Stephens and Craig Ogden for their very successful CD “Music from the Novels of Louis de Bernières” on the Chandos label (CHAN 9780) in 1999.

Performance Notes:
This is a wonderfully charming and graceful piece. In this arrangement the guitar and mandolin sounds should blend to create a beautiful and translucent sonority, perfect for the character of this piece.

A charming duet which should be played with lots of vitality and rhythmic energy. This piece has received many performances by various duos and has been recorded by Duetto Giocondo.

Información:

Little is known about Zerega except that he was a Spaniard who spent some time in London between 1895 and 1897 conducting a mandolin and guitar ensemble.
Souvenir de Bovio is the only piece of his that I have any knowledge of. It appears to have been originally written for mandolin and piano but adapts so directly for mandolin and guitar that the suspicion must be that he had the guitar in mind when writing the piano part.
Although essentially simple, it is a beautifully lyrical but dramatic piece that in many ways sums up the typical style of both playing and writing for the mandolin across the turn of the 20th Century. It is one of a handful of pieces that helped to convince me of the instrument’s beauty when listening to a recording from 1960 of Hugo D’Alton playing it with Clifton Helliwell on piano. It was the first mandolin recording I ever owned.
Alison Stephens
The piece can be heard in this arrangement on the 2009 CD Souvenirs (CHAN10563) played by Alison Stephens (mandolin) and Craig Ogden (guitar).

Autor: Raffaele Calace

Información:

Three of Calace’s most popular and accessible Intermediate level pieces.

  • Rondo, op.127
  • Romanza, op.134
  • Tarantella, op.18

Calace wrote over 170 pieces for mandolin altogether ranging from easy Waltzes (also available from Astute: 4 Easy Waltzes for Mandolin solo with optional guitar accompaniment) through to his two large scale and challenging Concerti. Much of his music is whimsical, charming and, occasionally, frivolous; but he has also written many emotionally charged pieces of some substance.
These are three of Calace’s most popular and accessible Intermediate level pieces. Some of Calace’s pieces for mandolin and piano had alternative guitar parts written by the composer, but many have been arranged with guitar parts over the years by different players and publishers. All three of these pieces work equally well with either piano or guitar accompaniment. Each piece throws up its own challenges for the player and can be treated in different ways according to the player’s individual abilities. Above all, each of these three pieces is fun and rewarding to play.

Performance Note: I have endeavoured to be faithful to Calace’s original tempo and dynamic markings. However, in several instances I have added my own markings to add more interest or to clarify the commonly used musical approach. Any editorial markings are in square brackets e.g. [accel.].
During Calace’s lifetime tremolo was very popular and was used on all kinds of phrases. However, these pieces work very well with lots of different approaches to tremolo; if the player is very competent then there are many places when tremolo can be utilised to great effect, but if the player is less confident or would like to try a fresher, different approach then these pieces can benefit from a more judicial use of tremolo. For these reasons, I have not in any way suggested where to, or where not to, use tremolo beyond Calace’s own original phrasing marks. It is worth noting that staccato marks were often used in this period of writing to indicate “non tremolo” and not necessarily the true meaning of the marking.
There are also a multitude of opportunities for using position playing and alternative fingering in these pieces. Again, for this reason I have used fingering and position markings sparingly. Players capable of playing these pieces should be at a stage in their ability when they can make these decisions for themselves and also explore many different options.

Sonata viennesa No. 5 d-Major
for baroque mandolin and guitar
arr. by Carmen Thiergärtner
Continuo: Jürgen Thiergärtner

level of difficulty: high

This sonata comes from a collection of Mandolin manuscripts with different occupations. They are assigned to the virtuoso gallant style. The Sonata is a challenge for the interpreters because it requires a high degree of imagination and love of detail, virtuosity and elegance in the tone.
