Composé en 2016 à l’intention de Vincent Beer-Demander, «Bis!» est une miniature pour mandoline et guitare dont le caractère virtuose n’est pas dénié d’un certain humour.

Associé pour la première fois dans l’univers musical de Pierick Houdy, la mandoline et la guitare développent un discours tonal assumé où chacun des deux instruments se voient attribuer un rôle musical bien défini et calibré à savoir  une guitare qui pose le cadre harmonique et accompagne une mandoline soliste et virevoltante.

«Bis!» est crée le 24 août 2016 au Festival International de Plectro de la Rioja en Espagne par Vincent Beer-Demander et Gregory Morello.

Let me make it clear straight away that this has no guitar involvement at all. The work is by an Italian mandolin player who was regarded as the most prolific writer for his instrument of his period, which was 1735-1786. This first group of six sonatas comes from a set of twelve all with three movements and all, as it turns out, happen to be great fun to play.
Actually, the entire mandolin parts are perfectly playable on the guitar without any deviation, and so, providing you knew a bass player, or a player of an instrument of a similar range, the guitarists amongst you could have a great deal of fun with this quite demanding and constantly entertaining music.

Ariel Ramirez wrote his masterpiece Alfonsina y el Mar as a homage to Alfonsina Carolina Storni who is considered one of the most eminent Latin american poets of the 20th century and who committed suicide by drowning in 1938. The universally-known Neopolitan song O Sole Mio written in 1898 by Eduardo di Capua has been performed and arranged by a great many artists from Caruso, Gigli and Lanza through to Elvis and Bryan Adams. Both these renowned melodies are presented in this new album arranged for guitar and mandolin by the inimitable French guitarist Roland Dyens. Anyone familiar with Dyens' style of composing and performing will know what to expect here and they won't be disappointed in the least. There are heaps of musical directions throughout the score, all of these being clarified in a two-page Notation chart and the technical standard required throughout both pieces is very high. The rewards however are great: these are not just good arrangements, they are superb, The harmonies and melodic variations used throughout makes this new album an absolute must for any pairing of these instruments, What with a lengthy article on Dyens, a brief biography of Storni, a full detailed score very nicely typeset and separate parts for both players, this is a classy new edition in all respects. Recommended.

Atanas Ourkouzounov. Ce Scherzo «à sa manière», est une pièce assez rock ou la mandole et la guitare sont traitées comme deux instruments égaux qui concertent, chantent et luttent tour à tour. Les tappings, les pizz. Bartók, les liés, les tamboras, sont autant d'effets techniques hérités de la guitare électrique dont Atanas Ourkouzounov se sert, s'inscrivant ainsi dans une dynamique et un langage résolument moderne.

Here is an advanced, atonal contemporary work for mandolin and guitar the composition of which was influenced by rock music. After a brief meditative opening the work begins proper with five pages in fast and rhythmic fashion with both instruments on an equal pairing playing in unison or in imitative fashion. 
During the piece many percussive technical effects are employed including pizzicato, «Bartok« pizzicato, tapping, tambour, etc. Scherzo a Modo Mio relies significantly on accentuation between the two instruments and it is in this quarter that any duo attempting this work will have to make sure everything is as it should be. If performed with enough skill and conviction, the work could make a significant impact in any concert of contemporary music. The music is presented in full score and separate parts for both players.
