“Wishes” was written in early 2013 for my wife, Stefanie Acquavella-Rauch. It was my love letter to Stefanie when we were dating. “Wishes” is filled with all the excitement, passion, romance, anticipation and joy of a young couple in love.
PERFORMANCE NOTES – Both mandolin parts are evenly written. This piece requires good right hand cross string picking technique. The beginning section opens with a minimalist pattern, which the 2nd mandolin will shift to create different rhythms & chord tones. Emphasis should be on the high B (e string), for both performers, to help the audience hear the shifting pattern. The accompaniment part is a chord shape that moves up and down the neck of the instrument. The performers should be careful to let as many notes sustain as possible to create a full sound for the melody line to float above. The middle section at measure 100 should be gentle and free, almost improvised. Mandolin 1 should improvise the chords written from measures 100–108. This can be a soft strumming pattern or as an arpeggiated chord. At measure 109, the first mandolin needs to tremolo the written chord using the flesh of their thumb or the side of the plectrum. It should be a soft gentle brushing sound across the strings, like the ocean breeze lightly caressing the sand on the beach. Measures 185-194 should be played very evenly with attention to the accented notes by both musicians. This will bring out the conversation between the two parts.

Let me make it clear straight away that this has no guitar involvement at all. The work is by an Italian mandolin player who was regarded as the most prolific writer for his instrument of his period, which was 1735-1786. This first group of six sonatas comes from a set of twelve all with three movements and all, as it turns out, happen to be great fun to play.
Actually, the entire mandolin parts are perfectly playable on the guitar without any deviation, and so, providing you knew a bass player, or a player of an instrument of a similar range, the guitarists amongst you could have a great deal of fun with this quite demanding and constantly entertaining music.

Descripcion:

Walking the Streets of Amsterdam is a contemporary mandolin duet influenced by American Minimalism. This piece has shifting patterns in the style of Steve Reich and harmonic structure in the style of Philip Glass. Aside from those influences, can be found the typical groove that is common in many of Chris Acquavella’s compositions. Acquavella composed this piece after a trip to Amsterdam. One can hear, in the shifting 16th note patterns, the chaos of walking through the mixture of tourists, Amsterdam locals and hurried bicycle riders on the narrow city streets of this picturesque city. The tourists would stop quite frequently and abruptly to look at the architecture or their iPhone maps. As one tries to avoid bumping into the tourist, the Hollander biker would ring their bells to remind you to stay out of their way. Luckily one could find serenity on the many canal cruises.

Performance Notes:
Even though a good portion of the piece can be played in first position, the performers should take notice of the various fingerings and marked positions in order to obtain the tonal and harmonic effect. The majority of the shifting patterns need to be played in 3rd position in order to get the desired mixture of open string and fingered notes to overlap; creating a particular soundscape. It is important that the two mandolinists are very even, rhythmically and in volume, when playing the shifting patterns; no one particular musician should be louder than the other. This changes when one player has the melody line. The overall piece should have a drive and energy that lifts audiences from their seats.

  • The Sally Gardens Traditional arr. A.Stephens
  • East Parkside Nigel Gatherer arr. A.Stephens
  • Wedding Tarantella Traditional Italian arr. A.Stephens

Prog notes for Mandolin Trios Book 1
This book contains 3 attractive pieces drawn from three folk traditions: English, Scottish and Italian. The three mandolin parts are fairly well balanced, each being of more or less similar technical standards, suitable for Intermediate players. Each part contains some tunes, counter-melodies and accompaniments. In this way each player learns all the different skills required to become a good ensemble player.

Performance notes:
These pieces all have an intrinsic simplicity. This should come out in the playing. It is the arranger’s intention that tremolo is only used where clearly marked (three lines across stem). Where positions are marked (particularly in Sally Gardens) it is often as much for tonal purposes as for technical facility. A higher position often results in a sweeter and richer tone. Sally Gardens and East Parkside benefit from a good clean ringing tone, gentle “spread” chord playing and attention to dynamic markings. Wedding Tarantella is a sprightlier piece. Keep it rhythmic and steady with a sense of celebration and fun.

1. El Noy de la Mare – Catalan Folk Song
2. The Queens Command – Orlando Gibbons
3. Canarios – Gaspar Sanz

Prog notes for Mandolin Trios Book 2:
This book contains 3 attractive contrasting pieces drawing on different musical influences: El Noy de la Mare is a beautifully haunting Catalan Folk Song; Queen’s Command is stately Elizabethan piece by the English composer Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625); and Canarios is a rhythmic dance by the Spanish composer Gaspar Sanz (1640-c.1710). The three mandolin parts are fairly well balanced, each being of more or less similar technical standards, suitable for Higher Intermediate players. Each part contains some tunes, counter-melodies and accompaniments. In this way each player learns all the different skills required to become a good ensemble player. This book follows on from Mandolin Trios Book 1 and generally presents more challenges to the players, both technically and also as an ensemble.

Performance notes:
All three of these pieces make good concert pieces when care is taken in learning them accurately and carefully, both individually and as an ensemble.
It is the arranger’s intention that tremolo is only used where clearly marked (three lines across stem). Where positions are marked it is often as much for tonal purposes as for technical facility. A higher position often results in a sweeter and richer tone.
El Noy de la Mare is presented here in the slightly unusual key of E major and contains some fairly fast runs in both M1 and M2. It is quite a challenging piece and care should be taken to keep the tempo steady.
The Queen’s Command is in many ways the easiest piece in the book but, again, care should be taken to keep the tempo steady. The biggest challenge in this piece is keeping the ensemble playing tight. It is quite difficult to ensure players move together on the recurring dotted rhythm. (e.g. M1 and M3 in bar 1, and M1 and M2 in bar 2.)
Canarios is very well known as a solo guitar piece. It is a lively piece and features an attractive rhythmic idea of alternating between quavers grouped in two groups of three (as is normal for 6/8) and quavers grouped in three groups of two (more common in 3/4). Try to become accustomed to these rhythms before starting work on the piece. Many players will find the main challenge of this piece is the fairly fast chord changes in M1 and M3.
