In a career spanning over twenty years, Alison Stephens inspired countless aspiring musicians as a performer, educator and composer. Her years writing music produced a range of material from instructional pieces for beginning to advanced players, duos for mandolin and guitar and expressive and challenging solo concert pieces. In her work as mandolin editor at Astute Music, she strove to make a wider selection of original mandolin pieces by composers such as Raffaelle Calace, Benedetto Persichini and Michael Corrette available to the wider public.
The pieces in this volume represent some of the last pieces Alison Stephen composed. Included in this collection is ‘The Golden Ticket’, a piece written by Alison Stephens for the winner of the 2009 ‘Golden Ticket’ promotion. Each piece is aimed at the intermediate guitar and mandolin player and they are faithful to Alison Stephens’ original fingerings, tempo and dynamic markings and performance notes have been added where necessary. From the ominous drive of ‘Grey Clouds’ to the playful bounce of ‘The Orange Hat’, players should endeavour to communicate the moods set by each of these pieces.
